Be it your first or third time to Taipei, one thing you must include in your itinerary is a visit to one of Taipei’s night markets. As many would say, no trip to Taipei is complete without visiting the local night markets. One can expect to find a vibrant and lively night market scene in Taipei. Night markets are well loved for their wide array of street food (at affordable prices), bustling atmosphere and the sheer amount of cheap deals!

Here are 7 Amazing Night Markets To Include In Your Taipei Itinerary.

1. Shilin Night Market

Shilin Night Market

As one of the biggest and most popular night markets in Taiwan, be sure not to miss this out. From street food to milk tea, this night market is a haven for foodies and shoppers alike. You can find many of Taiwan’s traditional foods sold here such as the notorious Stinky Tofu (臭豆腐), Oyster Omelette (蚵仔煎), Sweet Potato Balls (红薯球) and Taiwanese Fried Chicken (台湾炸鸡).

The night market is divided into two sections. One is a full-scale snack market that takes up a few blocks. Many delicious local delicacies can be found here. After satisfying your appetite, it is time to burn some extra calories by walking around the many shopping stalls. Particularly popular items that you can find include souvenirs, clothes and Chinese tea sets.

The next section is a four story building, one floor above ground and three underground. A large variety of clothes, accessories and souvenirs can be found on the ground floor. On level B1 is a food court which is home to many vendors selling local food. You will definitely be spoilt for choice. If you are planning to drive to the night market, rest assured that there are plenty of parking lots available on levels B2 and B3.

2. Raohe Street Night Market

Raohe Street Night Market

One of the oldest night markets in Taiwan, the 600m long path along Raohe street is a popular and well-loved tourist attraction. You can expect to find a large variety of goods such as clothes, accessories, games and electronics. There is even a small amusement arcade where kids can enjoy fun games!

While you’re here, do check out the various food stalls selling a range of street food items. Examples include the Taiwanese beef noodles sold by many vendors at Raohe. It is a classic Taiwanese dish served with tender slices of beef soaked in a rich and flavourful broth. The good old Taiwanese sausage is another must-have.

Head on to the eastern end of the night market outside Songshan station to visit the Ciyou Temple (慈祐宮), built by residents during the Qing Dynasty era. Its proximity to MRT Green Line 3 and train makes it a staple in every Taipei travel itinerary. It is also one of Taipei’s prettiest temples so be sure to check it out!

Located near the night market is Wufenpu (五分埔), a clothing shopping outlet. You can find many great bargains and discounts in the abundance of fashion shops here. Take a stroll through the maze of alleys before making your way to the night market for a delicious meal.

3.Ningxia Night Market

Located near the historic Dihua Street and Dadaocheng, Ningxia is one of the most interesting neighbourhoods for exploring and street photography in Taipei. It boasts an old-school and laidback Taiwan vibe. This is a smaller night market which comprises mainly food stalls. Take note that there are no clothing stalls here and it is largely food based.

You can find many famous and traditional gourmet snacks such as the Michelin recognised Liu Yu Zai deep fried taro balls and traditional mochi sesame. In addition, there are tons of food stalls lying adjacent to the night market. With so many yummy street foods at affordable prices, Ningxia will definitely please your wallet and stomach.

4. Ximending Night Market

Ximending Night Market

Similar to Myeongdong in Seoul or Shibuya crossing area in Tokyo, Ximending is a pedestrian shopping district offering a large variety of products. It is especially popular among tourists and youths. You can see Japanese buildings such as the Red House Theater and Matsu Temple which was built during the Japanese occupation in the past. Many big brands such as Nike, H&M and Adidas are present here. There are also many souvenir shops selling local Taiwanese desserts such as mochi and pineapple cake.

For dinner, we recommend a Taipei local favourite noodle shop called A Zong Mian Xian restaurant. Their noodles are highly famed and are affordably priced at 45 TWD per bowl. Another popular dish worth trying is the Tian tian Li Lu Rou Fan or braised pork rice. It is a simple yet delicious dish loved by Taiwanese people. My personal favourite snack would be the famous flame-torched beef cubes. You can opt for seasonings such as salt, pepper, teriyaki or cumin. They are just so tasty and irresistible!

In the night, many buskers and street performers can be found singing, dancing and performing. This definitely livens up the atmosphere and offers an amazing experience for both locals and tourists.

Located in one of the most trendy neighbourhoods in Taipei, Shida night market is just behind the National Taiwan Normal University. It is a rather quaint and compact space, perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing time. Although there is a large selection of street food, one can find many stalls owned by young and aspiring entrepreneurs looking to establish themselves. Shopping here is a good way to support the local fashion community and obtain pieces which cannot be found elsewhere. Even if you are not looking to shop, it is a nice place to wander around due to the cozy and relaxing atmosphere.

If you would like to get a peak at the latest style trends in Taiwan or experience something different, Shida is the perfect place for you.

Huaxi Night Market

More commonly known as Snake Alley for its unique food, this night market offers an unique experience in the Wanhua district. Nearby attractions include the Bopiliao Historical Block and Longshan Temple. You will know you are here when you see a large, red, palace-style archway at the entrance of the market. It is a good place to start for tourists hoping to discover this ancient part of the city.

Majority of the shops have been operating for years and have thus achieved prominence in Taiwanese history and culture.

The most famous food dish is snake soup, which can only be found on Huaxi Street. Other interesting food dishes include turtle testicles and snake meat and blood, which gave the market its nickname. Shops such as traditional Chinese massage parlors, fortune-telling stores and boutiques can be found here.

7. Nanjichang Night Market

If you are seeking truly authentic Taiwan street food and culture, this night market is the ideal one for you. It is known for its truly Taiwanese character and is favoured by locals. Very few tourists are found in this area, making for a perfect night of true street food experience. The market was named after an old military airport that was once built in this area. It is made up of several tiny restaurants and street food stalls along two roads that meet at a cross junction. Although it is smaller in size as compared to other night markets, the street food offered here is on par with the others. Good news is that the food sold at night is also available even in the day.

Recommended shops to visit are Lai Lai Dumplings, which is over 30 years old and Song Qing Popiah. The latter has garnered a Michelin Bib Gourmand commendation and is a favourite among locals.

For anyone interested in learning about Taiwan history and culture, pop by the National Museum of History located nearby.
